Where is EDS in the strategic planning process?
EDS is steadily and thoughtfully progressing toward a “bold and optimistic” new chapter. EDS is now completing a 12-month strategic planning process, exploring new models for theological education. The process has involved extensive listening sessions and stakeholder engagement to shape EDS’s future. The board approved an initial Mission and Core Values statement in February 2024, focusing on expanding innovative, justice-oriented educational programs.
What has EDS been doing since it left Union?
Since the separation, EDS has undertaken a churchwide listening and strategic visioning process to determine its future direction.Simultaneously, EDS has continued to offer accessible programs that resource church leaders for engaging justice issues, including a pilgrimage, public events, and online workshops.
In February 2024, the EDS board approved a vision and values statement and commenced a presidential search in line with this vision. The new president's top priority will be translating this vision into a strategic plan and then operationalizing it with the EDS staff team.
What are EDS’ plans for the future?
EDS aims to be an innovative, inclusive educational institution dedicated to justice, inclusivity, and theological formation. The new president's top priority will be developing and implementing a strategic and operational plan based on the vision and values statement presented in January 2024.
Will EDS once again become a degree-granting institution?
EDS is deeply committed to quality theological formation. Right now, the EDS board is undergoing a strategic visioning process to explore what is most needed in the field of theological education in the Church today. As we do this, we are offering non-degree workshops and webinars covering a variety of topics, and we hope that you will participate in an upcoming program offering.
Has EDS selected its next president?
The search process for EDS’s next president is ongoing. The board is committed to identifying the best candidate for the role and has extended the time period for this search process.
I’m an alum. How can I engage with EDS/what is EDS doing to engage alums?
EDS values its alumni community and has appointed Canon Lydia Kelsey Bucklin ’15 as a liaison. Additionally, Christopher Montella ’15 will support alumni outreach at General Convention. Alumni are encouraged to connect with Lydia Bucklin to learn more about engagement opportunities, including monthly Zoom connect gatherings. What is the status of EDS’ endowment?
EDS is financially well-positioned to fulfill its mission within the Episcopal Church. As of April 30, 2024, the endowment was valued at $77.3 million.
Why did EDS leave Union/what happened with Union?
In March 2023, Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) and Union Theological Seminary mutually decided to end their formal affiliation at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 academic year. This decision, made at the five-year review mark, has offered EDS greater missional and operational freedom as it continues to discern its future as a source of progressive theological education.
Where is EDS physically located?
EDS is leasing space at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. This location supports EDS's Episcopal identity and maintains historical connections to Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. The central location at St. John the Divine facilitates the coordination of EDS’s programs and services.
Will EDS be an independent school or seek affiliation with an existing institution?
EDS is once again an independent institution. The board is actively listening to alumni and stakeholders to determine the best path forward, engaging them through multiple listening sessions as part of the strategic planning process.
